‘X-Men’ Star Sir Ian McKellen Comments On Bryan Singer Allegations

During an interview with British broadcaster Evan Davis for National Student Pride 2019, X-Men star Sir Ian McKellen commented on the sexual misconduct allegations against Bryan Singer.

Director Bryan Singer currently faces multiple sexual misconduct allegations, though the filmmaker has not been charged or convicted of a crime and denies any wrongdoing. When asked about the allegations, Sir Ian McKellen, who collaborated with Bryan Singer on three X-Men films, stated that he is “waiting” for accusations to be made against him:

“Well frankly, I’m waiting for someone to accuse me of something, and me wondering whether they’re not telling the truth and me having forgotten.”

Sir Ian McKellen then weighed in on why he believes Bryan Singer and Kevin Spacey, who also faces sexual misconduct allegations, may have committed such horrific acts:

“With the couple of names you’ve mentioned, people I’ve worked with, both of them were in the closet. And hence all their problems as people and their relationships with other people, if they had been able to be open about themselves and their desires, they wouldn’t have started abusing people in the way they’ve been accused.”

As for whether or not Bryan Singer and Spacey should be allowed to work again, McKellen replied, “I rather think that’s up to the public.”

Meanwhile, the X-Men franchise is set to continue with a new film due to be released this summer. Directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.

Dark Phoenix will be released in theaters on June 7, 2019.
