RUMOR: ‘New Mutants’ Is Final Fox X-Men Universe Movie To Hit Theaters

Fox’s live-action X-Men movies have been consistently hitting theaters for nearly 20 years, but that may all come to an end later this year with New Mutants.

As a part of their plan for eventual world domination, Disney is currently working on purchasing the vast majority of 20th Century Fox’s assets, pending government approval. That includes getting back the X-Men film rights to Marvel Studios, which Disney already owns. The deal is speculated to close sometime later this summer, which likely means 2019 will be the end for the X-Men on the big screen as we’ve come to know them.

Though no official word has been given by the studio, SuperBroMovies’ own Daniel Richtman dropped the knowledge bomb on Twitter:

New Mutants will be the last X-Men Universe movie for Fox and Dark Phoenix the last one coming from the main series.”

These rumors at least match up with the timeline. If Disney does indeed buy 20th Century this year, then they will be taking over the franchise and will likely want to reintroduce these now iconic characters into their already established Marvel Cinematic Universe, which would entail a whole new reimagining.

New Mutants was originally slated for release on Friday, April 13th of 2018, but has since been delayed twice. The film is now looking like it will drop August 2nd of this year.

What do you think about these rumors? Are you surprised at all to hear that New Mutants will likely be the final X-Men movie? Or were you already expecting as much? Let us know in the comments below!

Based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name, the film centers on five young mutants who are just discovering their abilities while being held in a secret facility against their will.

Directed by Josh Boone from a script co-written by Knate Lee, The New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin / Magik, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie / Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa / Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar / Mirage, and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes.

The New Mutants is scheduled to be released in theaters on August 2, 2019.
