Warning: this article contains major spoilers for Zachary Levi’s Shazam!
Once the credits begin to roll for DC’s latest film, Shazam! starring Zachary Levi, fans are treated to two post-credits scenes, one of which you’ll definitely want to stick around for.
The mid-credits scene picks up with Mark Strong’s now-defeated Doctor Sivana. The fallen villain is now in jail, painting the symbols of the Seven Deadly Sins over and over again, attempting to reopen the gateway to the rock of eternity. When suddenly, Mister Mind appears in the cell. We got a glimpse of Mister Mind earlier in the film, but this scene gives him a proper introduction, revealing the escaped Shazam villain as he teases the Monster Society of Evil, seemingly setting up the villainous organization’s inclusion in the sequel.
After the end credits complete, we’re given one more scene with Zachary Levi’s Shazam and Jack Dylan Grazer’s Freddy Freeman which is really just a gag that’s already been glimpsed in the film’s marketing. The two are back to testing out Billy’s powers, this time attempting to see whether or not he can talk to fish. Once it’s clear he can’t, Billy pokes fun at the power followed by Freddy expressing just how cool and powerful the ability could be.
So what do you think? Are you excited for the Monster Society of Evil to potentially appear in a sequel? Are you disappointed Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam wasn’t teased in the post-credits? What do you hope to see from Zachary Levi’s Shazam next? Let us know in the comments below!
David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) has directed Shazam! from a script written by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. Shazam! has been produced by New Line Cinema in conjunction with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment. Peter Safran produced the film along with Dwayne Johnson, Christopher Godsick, Jeffrey Chernov, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia serving as executive producers.
Shazam! stars Asher Angel, Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Faithe Herman, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans and Djimon Hounsou. Here’s the official synopsis for DC’s Shazam!:
“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).”
Shazam! will be released in theaters on April 5, 2019, and will be followed by Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020, and Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020. A standalone Joker film set outside of the DC Films universe starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime is also set to hit theaters October 4, 2019.
Ben Affleck is officially out as Batman and it's a pretty sad day.
