Mallrats was released in 1995 and is one of the most beloved movies in the filmography of Kevin Smith. Part of the reason why it is so beloved is because Stan Lee makes one of his most memorable cameo appearances in which he gives Brodie Bruce (Jason Lee) some sound life advice on love and romance. The cameo in Captain Marvel depicts Stan Lee (as himself) reading the script to the Kevin Smith film on the Los Angeles Metro Rail, in which he rehearses to himself the line, “Trust me, true believer.”
Kevin Smith was incredibly touched by how Captain Marvel gave his film a shoutout, especially since it’s such a brilliantly meta way to somehow incorporate him into the canon of the MCU. Currently, Kevin Smith is directing the upcoming Jay and Silent Bob Reboot where he will also reprise his role as Silent Bob as seen in numerous of his films in the View Askewniverse.
While in principal photography for the film, Kevin Smith shared a photo from the set that features Jason Lee reprising his role as Brodie Bruce in a comic book shop holding an issue of Captain Marvel:
Shooting nod to Captain Marvel must have been incredibly poignant for both Kevin Smith and Jason Lee. Because both of them worked with the late Stan Lee on Mallrats, reprising their respective roles 24 years later is certainly a cathartic experience for the two, especially after seeing the Marvel legend’s cameo earlier this month.
